Electronic Load Controller (ELC) is used in place of conventional Electromechanical Speed governor in microhydro power plants.
ELC is a device which maintains constant load on generator in spite of fluctuations in user’s load. This avoids the use of any flow regulating device and makes the scheme simple.
An Electronic Load Controller controls the speed of Synchronous Generator by maintaining the power output of the generator constant. The Electronic Load Controller maintains a constant generator output frequency by supplying a secondary dummy ballast load to consume the power rejected by the consumer’s load as shown in Figure1.1
Whenever, there is a change in the consumer load then system frequency changes, ELC restore the system frequency by making relevant change to the power consumed by the dummy load.
ELC is used in run-off river type plant. In run off river plant there is no meaning of saving water at light load. So there is no harm, if power un-used by the consumers is wasted in dump load.
The principle advantage of ELC is that overall system is simpler and less costly. It eliminates the need of conventional governor so that the turbine design is simpler. ELC is maintenance free mechanism because it has no moving parts like conventional governor.
