I needed to make the scoreboard software for the annual robotics competition 2067 organized by robotic club of our college. Having experience with flash, I thought flash would be wonderful for front end glamorous score display with animations and beautiful graphics. But, I needed some method to update the score remotely. Finally, I decided to code the backend in Visual Basic and use file read-write as a means of communication. Since, the scores was required to be updated so frequently (every few seconds) due to the fast paced nature of the competition, several peoples were needed to consistently and accurately update the scores. Since the communication was file based (the backend VB software would update the score in a text file and the front end Flash software would periodically check the file for updated score and would update the score in the display accordingly), several people could run their own instance of the VB software, and each could independently add to the total score.
Here is few screen shots of the system. Both the frontend and back end.
